SVALBARD - Giugno 2017

 Meravigliosa esperienza che va al di fuori di qualsiasi altro canone di viaggio per il modo di come è stato organizzato, per l'unicità  dei paesaggi totalmente immersi in mezzo ai ghiacci e per tutto ciò che non ti aspetti di vedere vivendo una vera e propria spedizione su una rompighiaccio in mezzo ai ghiacci artici ....

Day 1 – Wednesday, 14th June 2017 Longyearbyen

On this nice day in Longyearbyen, when we made our way to the pier we found out that indeed we were about to embark on an very adventurous voyage. Ortelius was at anchor out in the fjord, and once we had arrived we met members of the expedition team and our transfer to the ship would be by zodiac. Soon we were crossing the calm waters towards the ship. After we had made our way up the Ortelius gangway, we met the hotel team who showed us to our cabins. As soon as we had settled into our comfortable home for the next 8 days, most of us found themselves either on the outside decks to enjoy the views and the sunshine or in the bar for a coffee or tea.

In questa bella giornata a Longyearbyen, appena arrivati al molo ci rendemmo subito resi conto che in realtà ci stavamo per imbarcare in un viaggio molto avventuroso. La nave Ortelius era all'esterno nel fiordo, e una volta arrivati incontrammo membri della squadra di spedizione ci trasferimmo sulla  nave con gli zodiac. Dopo aver attraversato le acque calme verso la nave e percorso la passerella Ortelius, incontrammo la squadra di ragazzi che ci mostrarono le nostre cabine. Non appena sistemato i bagagli nella nostra comoda casa per i successivi 8 giorni, ci trasferimmo  sui ponti esterni per godersi le viste e il sole o nel bar per un caffè o un tè.

Soon it was time to gather in the lecture room for several welcome briefings.  A drill of the general alarm (seven short blasts followed by one long blast) was made, and we all donned the SOLAS orange life jackets and mustered in the bar guided by crew and staff. After a roll call to assure everyone was present we went out to the lifeboats and some of us actually went inside.

Ben presto fu il momento di riunirsi nella sala conferenze per diversi briefing di benvenuto.  Fu fatto un trillo dell'allarme generale (sette brevi esplosioni seguito da una lunga esplosione) e tutti indossammo i giubbotti di vita arancione SOLAS raccolti nella barra guidata dall'equipaggio e dal personale. Dopo una telefonata per assicurare che tutti fossero presenti, andammo alle imbarcazioni di salvataggio dove alcuni di noi vi sono entrati.

We returned to our cabins briefly before regrouping with Captain Ernesto Barria in the lounge for a welcoming champagne or juice before heading down to the dining room for our first scrumptious dinner prepared by Chef Heinz and his staff. Meanwhile, Ortelius made her way through Isfjorden towards the open sea. After dinner, our Expedition Leader Rinie told us that there was a special treat waiting for us: whales had been sighted just ahead of the ship! And there they were, several blows beautifully backlit against the coastline – two Blue Whales were seen right next to the ship for a while and at a bit of a distance a Humpback Whale was seen. What an exciting first day, and what a start to our voyage!

Tornammo nelle nostre cabine velocemente prima di ricongiungerci con il capitano Ernesto Barria nel salotto per uno champagne o succo di benvenuto prima di andare verso la sala da pranzo per la nostra prima cena deliziosa preparata dallo chef Heinz e dal suo staff. Nel frattempo Ortelius iniziò a farsi strada attraverso Isfjorden verso il mare aperto. Dopo la cena, il nostro leader di spedizione Rinie ci disse che ci stava aspettando una sorpresa: le balene erano state avvistate poco prima dalla nave! E c'erano diversi dorsi splendidamente retroilluminati contro la costa: vedemmo due balene blu proprio accanto alla nave e, a un certo punto, si vide anche una balena di Humpback. Che primo giorno emozionante e quale inizio al nostro viaggio!

Day 2 – Thursday, 15th June 2017 Tinayrebukta

Following last night’s Blue Whale encounter we had a restful night and we awoke in the morning to open seas and a change of plans. Instead of sailing between the islands of Danksoya and Amsterdamoya we sailed into Krossfjord and dropped anchor in Tinayrebukta. 30 knots of wind offshore called for a new schedule and that is often the way in the expedition cruise business.The morning on board passed quickly in preparation for landings. Safety and procedure in zodiac operations and on land (in Polar bear country) must be covered by briefings and this was followed by the distribution of rubber boots.

Dopo l'incontro con le Blue Whales di ieri sera trascorremmo una notte riposante svegliandosi la mattina in mezzo al mare con  un cambiamento di piani. Invece di navigare tra le isole di Danksoya e Amsterdamoya noi navigammo in Krossfjord attraccando a Tinayrebukta. 30 nodi di vento in mare aperto hanno richiesto un nuovo programma e questo può accadere durante una spedizione in nave. La mattina a bordo passò rapidamente in preparazione per gli sbarchi. La sicurezza e la procedura nelle operazioni per gli zodiac e su terra (nel paese degli orsi polari) devono essere oggetto di briefing, fatto successivamente alla distribuzione degli stivali di gomma.

After lunch the zodiacs were launched and we went ashore on a sandy beach overlooked by the mountains, glaciers and moraines of this beautiful landscape. Three walks were offered and we chosen the medium one. It was cold but after half an hour the sun shone a little and the cloud thinned out. We,  medium walkers moved some way uphill and inland. Some wildflowers were beginning to bloom and several species of birds were seen. King and Common Eider along with Puffins passed by the shore and Arctic terns came close enough for folks to get good photos. Before to come back on the boat we saw a very nice seal close to us on the sea.

Dopo pranzo gli zodiac furono lanciati e andammo a terra in una spiaggia di sabbia a ridosso di montagne, ghiacciai e dalle morenesi di questo bellissimo paesaggio. Delle tre passeggiate proposte scegliemmo la media. Fu stato freddo ma dopo mezz'ora il sole iniziò a uscire e le nuvole si ridussero. Noi, escursionisti di mezzo ci muovemmo in qualche modo in salita e nell'entroterra.  Alcuni fiori di campo cominciavano a fiorirsi e furono viste diverse specie di uccelli. Re e Common Eider insieme ai Puffin passati dalla riva e le sterne artiche arrivarono abbastanza vicino alle persone consentendoci di ottenere buone foto. Prima di risalire avvistammo una meraviglioa foca molto vicina a noi durante la passeggiata sulla riva del mare.

The wind increased a little, the temperature dropped and by six o’clock we were all back on board and ready for refreshments, recap and a briefing about the next day’s planned activity. Dinner at seven was followed by the cruise near the front of the Glacier. This brought an end to our first day of adventures in the high Arctic.

Il vento aumentò un pò e la temperatura scese; per le 18.00  rientrammo tutti a bordo e pronti per rinfreschi, fare un altro briefing sull'attività programmata del giorno successivo. Cena alle 19.00 seguita dal proseguo della crociera accanto alla parte anteriore del ghiacciaio per finire il nostro primo giorno di avventure nell'alto Artico.

Day 3 – Friday, 16th June 2017 Pack Ice

Wind: NE 2-3 m/s Weather: cloudy Temperature: 3°C

 When we looked out from the ship on Friday morning, we were just a few km offshore from the NW corner of the island of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. It was overcast with bits of low cloud and fog. We were surrounded by sea ice and that meant we might see polar bears!  The bridge and outdoor decks were soon filled with eager binocular-carrying passengers searching polar bears. The birders kept eyeballs and binoculars glued together the possibility of seeing such treasures as Sabine’s gull or the ivory gull. It was a big opportunity to observe the fascinating world of arctic pack ice.

Quando guardammo fuori dalla nave venerdì mattina, eravamo a pochi km  di distanza dall'angolo NW dell'isola di Spitsbergen, la più grande isola dell'arcipelago Svalbard. Era coperto da basse nuvole e nebbia. Eravamo circondati dal ghiaccio marino e questo significava che avremmo potuto vedere orsi polari! Il ponte e i piani esterni furono presto riempiti di passeggeri con binocolo che cercavano di vedere gli orsi. I birdwatcher mantenevano i binocoli incollati agli occhi, con la possibilità di vedere tesori come il gabbiano di Sabine o il gabbiano d'avorio. Fu una grande opportunità di osservare l'affascinante mondo del ghiaccio artico.

We looked with much attention but no bears were seen in the morning, although some old tracks in the snow told us that some bear was somewhere close to us. By early afternoon, the despair began for the plumbean sky and even the shadow of animals. To re-energize everyone, Bill gave a stimulating lecture on the history of arctic whaling, with some emphasis on Scottish involvement in that industry. His lecture also provided some insight into another aspect of the past in the very waters in which we were sailing. Sadly, as was the case elsewhere around the world, the whalers were terribly efficient in the waters around Svalbard. Consequently, only a tiny fraction remains of the large whale populations that once were resident here.

Guardammo con molta attenzione ma non riuscimmo a vedere nessun orso la mattina, anche se alcune vecchie tracce nella neve ci dicevano che ce ne potesse essere qualcuno vicino da qualche parte. Nel primo pomeriggio, stava iniziando lo sconforto per il cielo plumbeo e di animali nemmeno l'ombra. Per riattivare tutti, Bill dette una conferenza stimolante sulla storia della baleniera artica, con una particolare enfasi sul coinvolgimento scozzese in quell'industria. La sua conferenza fornì anche una visione di un altro aspetto del passato nelle acque in cui stavamo navigando. Purtroppo, come accade altrove in tutto il mondo, i balenieri erano terribilmente efficienti nelle acque intorno a Svalbard. Di conseguenza, solo una piccola frazione rimane delle popolazioni di balene grandi che una volta risiedevano qui.

Then, in the late afternoon, it happened. Rinie spotted a distant yellow dot moving a bit on the ice. On the sea ice, the polar bears usually appear as a buttery yellow rather than the white colour we always associate with them. This was exciting, not just because of spotting a bear, but seeing the birds on the ice that were scavenging on the remains of a seal killed. Captain Barria skilfully moved the Ortelius to about 150 m or so from the bear. The bear was a very large mature male, probably about 15-18 years of age and in very good physical condition. The animal killed was an adult bearded seal, which we were able to confirm from the large size of the skeleton and rib cage and the fact there was a substantial amount of skin left on the ice. The skin of a bearded seal is very thick so, rather than eat it, the bears just shave the fat off with their incisor teeth and swallow it. In contrast, they usually do eat the much thinner skin of a ringed seal along with all of the associated fat. Fur- thermore, it appeared that the seal had been killed a couple of days or so earlier because the bones had been cleaned by the gulls. Thus, the bear we were watching was likely not the one that killed the seal. There were about 25+ glaucous gulls but there was no sign of the ivory gulls, which have frequently been seen, in previous years.

Poi, nel tardo pomeriggio accadde. Rinie notò un punto lontano giallo che si muoveva un po 'sul ghiaccio. Sul ghiaccio marino, gli orsi polari di solito appaiono come un giallo burro piuttosto che il colore bianco che abbiamo sempre associato con loro. Questo fu eccitante, non solo per aver individuato un orso, ma vedendo anche gli uccelli sul ghiaccio che stavano a scavare sui resti di una foca uccisa. Il capitano Barria spostò abilmente l'Ortelius fino a circa 150 metri dall'orso. L'orso era un grande maschio maturo, probabilmente di circa 15-18 anni e in ottime condizioni fisiche. L'animale ucciso era una foca barbata adulta, che siamo riusciti a confermare dalla grande dimensione dello scheletro e della gabbia e del fatto che c'era una sostanziale quantità di pelle lasciata sul ghiaccio. La pelle di una foca barbata è molto spessa, quindi, piuttosto che mangiarla, gli orsi bruciano solo il grasso con i denti incisivi e lo inghiottono. Al contrario, di solito mangiano la pelle molto più sottile di una foca a sfera insieme a tutti i grassi associati. Inoltre, sembrava che l'animale fosse stato ucciso un paio di giorni o prima perché le ossa erano state pulite dai gabbiani. Quindi, l'orso che stavamo guardando non era probabilmente quello che ha ucciso la foca. C'erano circa 25 gabbiani glaciali ma non c'era alcun segno dei gabbiani d'avorio, che sono stati spesso visti negli anni precedenti.

A little later, we saw a second adult male though he was a little smaller than the first. Normally, adult males avoid the ships altogether but this male actually approached close to the stern where he continued to take in the scene. All the while, his tongue was going in and out of his mouth, suggesting he was trying to make a better assessment of things with his sense of smell. Overall, these two bears provided some outstanding viewing along with some interesting insights into their life on the sea ice and a nice way to end our first day in the sea ice.

Poco più tardi, vedemmo un secondo maschio adulto anche se un po 'più piccolo del primo. Normalmente, i maschi adulti evitano totalmente le navi, ma questo maschio si avvicinò alla poppa dove continuava ad assumere la scena. Tutto il tempo la sua lingua andava dentro e fuori dalla sua bocca, cercando di fare una migliore valutazione delle cose con il suo olfatto. Nel complesso, questi due orsi hanno fornito una visione straordinaria insieme ad alcune interessanti intuizioni nella loro vita sul ghiaccio marino e un bel modo per finire il nostro primo giorno nel ghiaccio marino.

Day 4 – Saturday, 17th June 2017 Pack Ice

The morning was beautiful, calm weather and a lot of free space around us. On the horizon we can only spot northwestern part of Spitsbergen and endless sea covered by ice. After breakfast we had zodiac cruise through the ice. After only few minutes on sea we spotted a Minke Whale – the smallest baleen whale, we were extremely lucky, they are really hard to observe because they show up for a moment, dive again and show up again in different place. Minke Whale swam around our zodiacs not further away than 30 meters. What a magnificent mammals.

La mattina fu bella, calma e molto spazio libero intorno a noi. All'orizzonte vedemmo solo la parte nord-occidentale di Spitsbergen e il mare senza fine coperto di ghiaccio. Dopo la colazione ci fu una crociera con gli zodiac in mezzo al ghiaccio. Dopo pochi minuti di mare abbiamo scoperto una balena di Minke - la balena di balena più piccola, fummo estremamente fortunati, sono davvero difficili da osservare perché si presentano per un momento, nuotano di nuovo e si presentano in un posto diverso. Minke Whale ha nuotato intorno ai nostri zodiac non più lontani di 30 metri. Che magnifici mammiferi.

After 1h30min zodiac cruise and delicious lunch, crew took place at highest deck to spot for us more Polar Bears. We participated in astonishing lecture about Polar Bears conducted by Ian Stirling the Word famous Polar Bear researcher. On a lecture we absorbed a lot of infor- mation about evolution and behaviour of those amazing animals, next after the lecture we heard long awaits voice from speakers about spotted Polar Bear. in 1 minute we were on a deck 6 with binoculars and cameras. During our long observation it began snowfall, on a ship with a most Christmas atmosphere.

Dopo 1h30min di escursione e delizioso pranzo, l'equipaggio si trasferì sul ponte più alto per individuare più Orsi Polari. Partecipammo a una sorprendente conferenza su Orsi Polari condotti da Ian Stirling il famoso ricercatore dell'Orso Polare. In una conferenza assorbimmo molte informazioni sull'evoluzione e il comportamento di quegli animali sorprendenti, dopo la conferenza che abbiamo sentito lungamente attende la voce dai relatori circa l'orso polare macchiato. in 1 minuto andammo sul ponte 6 con binocoli e telecamere. Durante la nostra lunga osservazione iniziòa a nevicare, su una nave con un'altissima atmosfera natalizia.

Before dinner we had some more detailed information about future plan for our stunning voyage. At the end of a day we were able to see our first Walrus on a sea ice, but after few minutes he dived at deep-sea water.

Prima di cena ci furono date alcune informazioni più dettagliate sul futuro piano per il nostro viaggio straordinario. Alla fine della giornata fummo in grado di vedere il nostro primo tricheco in un ghiaccio marino prima che si tuffasse nelle acque profonde.

Day 5 – Sunday, 18th June 2017 Magdelenafjord

GPS position at 1200: 79°33.6‘ N, 011°03.7‘ E Wind: calm Weather: overcast Temperature: 11°C

Rinie’s wake up call at 07.15 alerted us to the fact we only had 15 minutes to get into breakfast (early) in order to be up on deck and looking for wildlife. As Ortelius sailed into Magdelenafjord in the early morning sunshine we were rewarded with some Minke whales escorting the vessel to our anchor position.

La sveglia di Rinie alle 07.15 ci avvisò del fatto che avevamo solo 15 minuti per fare colazione (presto) per essere sul ponte e in cerca di animali selvatici. Mentre Ortelius navigava nel Magdelenafjord sotto il sole mattutino fummo ricompensati con alcune balenottere Minke che scortarono la nave fino alla nostra posizione di ancoraggio.

After a short briefing in the lounge, zodiac operations were soon underway and the groups split into their two options for the morning landings. The hikers would walk along the shore of Gravenesodden and the birders would head in the opposite direction to the Little Auk colony. Both groups had a wonderful morning, the fast hikers bathed in sunshine as they walked along the snow trail to their high point overlooking the glacier and across to the walrus haul-out on the opposite side of the bay. The hikers also enjoyed hearing some historical information from Arjen and learned something about glaciers from Szymon. The hikers had some quiet time listening to the natural sounds of the arctic before making their way back to the landing area. The birders also had an in- credible morning up at the Little Auk colony listening to and observing these amazing birds.

Dopo un breve briefing nel salone, le operazioni dello zodiaco erano presto in corso ei gruppi si dividevano nelle loro due opzioni per gli sbarchi mattutini. Gli escursionisti avrebbero camminato lungo la riva di Gravenesodden e gli aviatori si sarebbero diretti nella direzione opposta alla colonia Little Auk. Entrambi i gruppi hanno avuto una mattinata meravigliosa, gli escursionisti veloci si sono immersi nella luce del sole mentre camminavano lungo il sentiero innevato fino al punto più alto che dominava il ghiacciaio e attraverso il tricheco che saliva dal lato opposto della baia. Agli escursionisti è piaciuto anche ascoltare alcune informazioni storiche da Arjen e imparare qualcosa sui ghiacciai di Szymon. Gli escursionisti hanno passato un po 'di tempo ad ascoltare i suoni naturali dell'Artico prima di ritornare alla zona di atterraggio. Anche gli uccellini hanno avuto un'indescrivibile mattina nella colonia dei Little Auk ascoltando e osservando questi incredibili uccelli.

Following a wonderful lunch buffet provided by the hotel staff we were all fed and watered and ready for the afternoon activities. With Ortelius now re-positioned off Amsderdamoya we all en- joyed a sunny afternoon at Smeerenburg. Half the group visited the Walrus haul-out whilst the oth- ers listened to Bill and Rinie talk of the old whaling days, blubber cookers, flensing knifes, naval bat- tles and hard, cold conditions for the poor souls that used to make their living up at 79 degrees north. At half time each group changed ends for the final passage of the afternoon to play out. With memory cards jam packed we all made our way back to the vessel to see exactly how many pictures we had taken during our afternoon fun in the sun.

A seguito di un meraviglioso pranzo a buffet fornito dallo staff dell'hotel, siamo stati tutti nutriti e abbeverati e pronti per le attività pomeridiane. Con Ortelius ora spostato di nuovo a largo di Amsderdamoya, abbiamo goduto di un soleggiato pomeriggio a Smeerenburg. La metà del gruppo visitò l'uscita del tricheco mentre gli altri ascoltarono Bill e Rinie parlare dei vecchi giorni di caccia alle balene, di fornelli a gas, coltelli flensili, mazze navali e condizioni rigide e fredde per le povere anime che facevano il loro vivere fino a 79 gradi nord. A metà tempo ogni gruppo ha cambiato le estremità per il passaggio finale del pomeriggio per giocare. Con le schede di memoria piene zeppe, siamo tornati alla nave per vedere esattamente quante foto abbiamo scattato durante il nostro pomeriggio di divertimento al sole.

The fun didn’t stop there; the hotel team had arranged a fabulous arctic BBQ to take place on deck at the back of the ship. Sheltered from the wind and once again bathed in sunshine we all enjoyed the stunning views as we ate and re-hydrated at the free bar. What a day, so much to reflect upon as we sail north once more in the evening light towards the pack ice and the anticipation of another incredible day out on deck in the arctic sunshine.

Il divertimento non si è fermato qui; il team dell'hotel aveva organizzato un favoloso barbecue artico da portare sul ponte sul retro della nave. Riparati dal vento e ancora una volta bagnati dal sole, abbiamo goduto tutti della vista mozzafiato mentre mangiavamo e reidratati al bar gratuito. Che giornata, così tanto da riflettere mentre salpiamo verso nord ancora una volta nella luce della sera verso il pack ice e l'attesa di un'altra incredibile giornata in coperta sotto il sole artico.

Day 6 – Monday, 19th June 2017 Pack Ice

Wind: WNW 3 m/s Weather: clear Temperature: 6°C

It was another beautiful day...the sun shining on a sparkling seascape of ice. Ortelius zigzagging back and forth, east and west, north and south in search of our target species the iconic polar bear. On the bridge, a reassuring commentary from the captain and helmsman....Starboard 15...starboard 15 sir...hard to starboard...hard to starboard sir..thank you...

Era un altro bel giorno ... il sole splendeva su un scintillante paesaggio marino di ghiaccio. Ortelius zigzagando avanti e indietro, est e ovest, nord e sud alla ricerca della nostra specie bersaglio, l'iconico orso polare. Sul ponte, un commento rassicurante dal capitano e timoniere .... Starboard 15 ... starboard 15 signore ... difficile da starboard ... difficile da starboard signore ... grazie ...

Facilità fino a 10 ... facilità a 10 signore ... grazie ... a metà nave ... a metà sirena ... grazie ... timone difficile da portare ... timone difficile da portare signore ... grazie. ... a mezza nave ... a metà sirena ... grazie ... agio a 5 ... agio a 5 signore ... a metà nave ... a metà sirena ... timone a metà nave ... molto bene ... a dritta 15 ... a dritta ... difficile da stellare.

An announcement from the bridge ...‘Walrus’ had everyone crowded on the starboard side as the skillful captain slowly inched Ortelius up to a seemingly oblivious walrus sleeping on an ice-flow. Harp seals were spotted swimming in the larger dark leads in the sea ice.

Un annuncio dal ponte ... 'Tricheco' aveva tutti affollati sul lato di dritta mentre l'abile capitano avvicina lentamente Ortelius a un tricheco apparentemente ignaro che dorme su un flusso di ghiaccio. Le foche delle arpe sono state avvistate nuotando nei conduttori più grandi e bui del ghiaccio marino.

A constant crashing and grinding as the powerful bow of Ortelius sliced through successive ice flows. Passengers lining the rails with cameras clicking at the hypnotic slow-motion rearing of huge chunks of ice tumbling every now and again to expose polar cod... the target of excited wheeling and diving Kittiwakes who accompanied the vessel all day.

Un costante schiantarsi e macinarsi mentre il potente arco di Ortelius affettava i successivi flussi di ghiaccio. Passeggeri che fiancheggiano le rotaie con macchine fotografiche che scattano sull'ipnotico movimento al rallentatore di enormi pezzi di ghiaccio che cadono ogni tanto per esporre il codone polare ... l'obiettivo delle eccitanti rotazioni e dei Kittiwakes che hanno accompagnato la nave tutto il giorno.

Ian Stirling delivered another thought provoking lecture, this time on ‘Polar bears and Climate Change’. He used statistics from various sources to illustrate the problem of dwindling Arctic sea ice in relation to polar bears. He also confirmed that bears were being adversely affected by pollution as they were at the top of the Arctic food chain.

Ian Stirling ha pronunciato un altro discorso di provocazione, questa volta su "Orsi polari e cambiamenti climatici". Ha usato le statistiche di varie fonti per illustrare il problema della diminuzione del ghiaccio marino artico in relazione agli orsi polari. Ha anche confermato che gli orsi sono stati influenzati negativamente dall'inquinamento poiché erano ai vertici della catena alimentare artica.

The diving group boarded Zodiacs for an underwater excursion in the afternoon. Reporting back when they returned to the ship that visibility was very poor due to the enormous abundance of Krill in the water.

Il gruppo di immersione si è imbarcato su Zodiacs per un'escursione subacquea nel pomeriggio. Riportando al loro ritorno sulla nave, la visibilità era molto scarsa a causa dell'enorme abbondanza di Krill nell'acqua.

Day 7 – Tuesday, 20th June 2017 At Sea and Alkhornet

As various circumstances made it unfeasible to do a morning landing, we decided to see what the sea might offer us instead. The whole morning was spent looking out for the largest creatures of the planet just off Northwest Spitsbergen. And around they were, in the shape of the mighty Blue

Dato che varie circostanze rendevano impossibile fare un atterraggio mattutino, decidemmo di vedere invece cosa ci avrebbe offerto il mare. L'intera mattinata è stata dedicata alla ricerca delle più grandi creature del pianeta appena fuori Spitsbergen, nel nord-ovest. E intorno a loro c'erano, nella forma del possente Blu

Whale. The calm sea and visibility made it very easy to spot them from a distance and they seemed largely indifferent to our presence, simply minding their own business, which in these waters means feeding on krill, a tiny type of crustacean of which these animals are specialised feeders.

Balena. Il mare calmo e la visibilità hanno reso molto facile individuarli da lontano e sembravano in gran parte indifferenti alla nostra presenza, semplicemente badando ai loro affari, che in queste acque significa nutrirsi di krill, un minuscolo tipo di crostaceo di cui questi animali sono specializzati alimentatori.

The afternoon saw our last landing of this trip, at Alkhornet, beneath a beautiful bird cliff. Kitti- wakes and fulmars soared the sky as we landed and went for walks that were from very easy to reasonably challenging. While we did not see the foxes we had hoped to see there, beneath bird cliffs usually being excellent spots to find them, we could see some of their “work” in the shape of half- and fully eaten bird carcasses dotted around. Reindeer were plentiful though and the calves were a particular joy to watch. Reindeer tend to be indifferent to people to an extent but they de- serve full respect and that we tried to give them by always giving them an open side into which to run if they would feel threatened by our presence.

Il pomeriggio ha visto il nostro ultimo atterraggio di questo viaggio, ad Alkhornet, sotto una bellissima scogliera di uccelli. Kitti-wakes e fulmars hanno sorvolato il cielo mentre siamo atterrati e siamo andati a fare delle passeggiate da molto facili a abbastanza impegnative. Mentre noi non vedemmo le volpi che speravamo di vedere lì, sotto le scogliere degli uccelli di solito si trovano dei punti eccellenti per trovarle, potremmo vedere alcuni dei loro "lavori" nella forma di carcasse di uccelli semidistrutti e completamente mangiati sparsi qua e là. Le renne erano comunque abbondanti ei vitelli erano una gioia particolare da guardare. Le renne tendono ad essere indifferenti alle persone in una certa misura, ma rispettano il pieno rispetto e abbiamo cercato di dargli dando sempre loro un lato aperto in cui correre se si sentissero minacciati dalla nostra presenza.

It was mixed feelings to return to the ship, knowing that tomorrow would be the end of our trip, but all good things must come to an end and the memories from this adventure of ours will last a lifetime.

È stato un sentimento misto tornare sulla nave, sapendo che domani sarebbe stato la fine del nostro viaggio, ma tutte le cose belle devono finire e i ricordi di questa nostra avventura dureranno una vita.

Day 7 – Tuesday, 20th June 2017 Longyearbyen

GPS position at 0800: 78°14.0‘ N, 015°37.4‘ E

When Ortelius arrived at the port of Longyearbyen it was hard to believe that a week had passed since we had left. The expedition trip had exceeded all our expectations, and of all our lucky and truly amazing wildlife sightings, the most special ones certainly had been the Polar Bear mother with her cubs, the first evening’s whales and the walrus on the ice. And those were but a few of our many magic moments.

Quando Ortelius arrivò al porto di Longyearbyen era difficile credere che fosse passata una settimana da quando eravamo partiti. Il viaggio della spedizione aveva superato tutte le nostre aspettative, e di tutti i nostri avvistamenti di fauna selvatica fortunati e davvero straordinari, i più speciali erano certamente la madre dell'orso polare con i suoi cuccioli, le balene della prima sera e il tricheco sul ghiaccio. E quelli erano solo alcuni dei nostri molti momenti magici.

After this unforgettable trip, which had led us to both the northern and the south- ern part of Spitsbergen, we were rich in memories and knowledge about the Arctic and its wildlife. It was sad to say goodbye to the ship and its crew and to the new friends we had made during this week. This amazing trip will last us a lifetime – in our memories, in our imagination, and in our dreams.

Da questo viaggio indimenticabile, che ci ha condotti alla parte settentrionale e sud-orientale di Spitsbergen, ne siamo usciti più  ricchi di ricordi e conoscenze sull'Artico e la sua fauna selvatica. Fu triste dire addio alla nave, al suo equipaggio e ai nuovi amici che avevamo fatto durante questo settimana. Questo fantastico viaggio durerà per tutta la vita, nei nostri ricordi, nella nostra immaginazione e nei nostri sogni.
